History of Givenchy Timeline

1952: Hubert de Givenchy opens his own design house and The House of Givenchy is born, his first collection is made entirely from white mens shirt fabric, yet is still a massive success.

1954: Givenchy meets his muse, Audrey Hepburn. Givenchy designed her wardrobe for her role in Sabrina, winning an Academy Award for best costume design.

1957: Givenchy's designs appear in another Hepburn movie - Funny Face.

1961: In 1961 Givenchy designs Jackie Kennedy's gown to be worn on her first couples visit to France. Audrey stars in another film - Breakfast at Tiffany's, dressed once again in his designs.

1973: Givenchy launched his mens line.

1988: Givenchy sells his company to LVMH.

1995: This was the year Givenchy retired and Galliano was set up to take his place. However,  Galliano was offered a job at Dior only two years later and so the role ended up being filled by a young Alexander Mcqueen.

2001: Julian Macdonald was appointed role of Artistic Director for the women's lines.

2005: Both collections were taken over by Riccardo Tisci.
