The History of Tom Ford Timeline
Pre Career: Tom Ford was born in Texas in 1961. At 17, he moved to New York to study Art History at NYC university. Realising this wasn't for him, he flitted between advertising and commercials before taking an interior design degree at Parsons. It was during his time there that he realised he wanted to design clothes and also realised that he was gay. His interest in clothes design stemmed from an internship at Chloe in Paris, where Tom worked in the press office.
1990-1994: In 1990, Tom made a risky move and took a job as the chief womenswear designer for Gucci in Milan. Tom progressed quickly and within two years there was made the design director, designing women's, mens and shoes. By 1994 he was the creative director of Gucci and YSL (as they were bought by Gucci).
2004: Tom left Gucci in 2004 to create his own brand in his name.
2005: In 2005 he released his iconic Black Orchid fragrance which has become a well recognised classic and set the trend for the following scents released by the brand, unique and unconventional. He also announced he would be producing glasses frames and sunglasses.
2007: Tom opened his first flagship store in 2007, the same year he released his first collection of menswear and accessories.
2010: In 2010, he finally returned to making womenswear, releasing his SS11 Haute Couture fashion collection in September. By this time there were 21 Tom Ford stores world wide.
2010 - Present: Since then the Tom Ford brand has released numerous collections as well as extending the beauty range to a full make up colour collection.
